Artist-philosopher Louis de Wet was a pilgrim in search of some sort of truth about the human condition in all its contrary beauty, strange ugliness, unending tragedy, perverse comedy, sorrow and joy. This he tried to express in his work, on which he never ceased to cast a critical eye. But he never took himself too seriously, hence the epitaph he wrote about himself in one of his works:

He loved excellence

He tried to fornicate his way to the truth

He failed

But he had some good tries

And sometimes the result looked very like the truth.

Poor old de Wet
